Russia has its roots in Kyivan Rus, the kingdom located in what is now Ukraine. Until 1480 the country was overrun by the Mongols. Russia was constantly increasing in size from the 17th to 19th centuries. The defeat in the war with Japan at the beginning of the 20th century, the massacre of civilians on Bloody Sunday led to mass strikes. After Nicholas was forced to undertake, Lenin had founded the Communist Party. The Russian Revolution ended and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was established in 1922. Russia's non-aggression pact with Germany set the scene for WWII. As a result, Russia's extended control over much of Eastern Europe and became one of the world's superpowers. Gorbachov opened a new page in Russian history. He introduced political and economic reforms, which finally led to the eventual independence of 15 Soviet republics. Russia enters the 21st century as a developed and reconstructed country with tourism on a rise.
